How To Choose Your Medium
The choice of medium is the foundation of any type of art. Many
people get trapped choosing the medium. Certain materials are meant for
different tasks and skill levels. When choosing the medium quality and price
are the most important factors. The first step to achievement is to find your
skill level.
Many people find themselves being more advanced in certain subjects while weaker in some others. “I am a good painter, but I do not have a steady enough hand for drawing,” said freshman Natalie Dainesi . Natalie added to her comment talking about other people’s skill levels, “many people I know posses more of a talent when they know how to use their utensils.” This holds true for many new and experienced artists. New artists should find tasks that they excel in and match it with the proper supplies to achieve a higher level of success. Laura E started off with these basic tools and now is drawing on a regular basis. "I would classify myself as a pretty good artist. I get better everytime I draw and I will always be open to new materials. I can get my supplies almost anywhere I go," said Laura a seventh grader. Using basic tools that can be found in any store are sometimes the best for starting artists. Select items in a price range. Be careful not to buy materials that will break. These will not suit the needs of the artist. This generally is the cheaper equipment. Crayola makes cheap, reliable paint, markers, colored pencils, and crayons. “Crayola crayons seem to last the longest and are not too waxy,” said Laurel Carpenter a freshman. Adrianne E said," I sometimes like Rose Art brand crayons because they seem to have more colors." Whichever material is chosen it does not neccisarily make a difference when just crayons are being used. But when more advanced techniques are needed better matierals will be needed. Once an intermediate level is reached the artists are probably ready to spend a little more money on the choice of medium. Intermediate artists should probably try materials that can be used with more techniques. These materials can be found at any craft store, including Michael’s. Faber Castell products are quality choice but they tend to be on the pricey side. The quality is worth the extra dollar. (Kara E) |
